Cheryl Logan's "The High School PEPI Program (Physical Education Pupil Instructors)" in Piedmont 2 (Handout)
Description: For over 30 years, Wake County Public School high school students have had the opportunity to enroll in an elective class called PEPI (Physical Education Pupil Instructor Program). Through this unique program, high school students are trained to assist elementary classroom teachers in leading physical education activities. This program provides a cross-age educational experience beneficial for both high school and elementary school children. For example, high school students are provided the opportunity to build both individual self-esteem and leadership abilities. At the same time, elementary students and adapted program students are given the opportunity to interact socially with a “big brother” or “big sister.”

Instructional training will be given to each high school PEPI student prior to working with elementary students. Classroom instruction will contain training in communication skills, elementary physical education and interpersonal skills in working with students in all grade levels. The content and experiences provided through this course can assist in becoming a building block for a student who has interest in working with young people. Objectives include enhancing students’ self-esteem, self-awareness, communication and social interaction skills, including leadership qualities.

Most e-cigarettes and ALL JUULs contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can harm adolescent brain development and has been associated with health and behavior problems.

CATCH My Breath Youth E-Cigarette Prevention Program (CMB) includes a best-practices based curriculum for middle and high schools. Created by researchers at the University of Texas School of Public Health, CMB is based on a Social Cognitive Theory model of prevention and aligns with National Health Education Standards.

The 4-lesson program uses peer facilitators to guide classroom activities that increase students’ knowledge, motivations to abstain from e-cigarettes including JUUL and build skills for resisting peer and media influences. The Program is being offered for free thanks to CVS Health as part of their Be The First Campaign.

Simulation as an alternative form of classroom instruction enhances critical and analytical thinking (Martin & McEvoy, 2003). Sport Management faculty are able to incorporate simulation as a tool for converting theoretical concepts into meaningful learning outcomes (Newman, Irwin, Klenosky, & Gillentine, 2003). Charlotte, North Carolina is among the most populated U.S. metropolitan areas without a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise. A simulation was designed for Sport Management students to better understand the process of bringing an MLS franchise to the Charlotte market. There are ten roles for students to play in this simulation: 1) investor/franchise operator, 2) CRVA representative, 3) Mayor’s office, 4) City Council member residing in affluent neighborhood, 5) City Council member residing in middle-income neighborhood, 6) City Council member residing in economically depressed neighborhood, 7) Duke Energy executive, 8) Bank of America executive, 9) Mecklenburg County Schools representative, 10) Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership representative. Students should find this simulation challenging in that there are complex relationships between the stakeholders, high stakes (stadium will cost over $200 M), and perhaps greater needs in the city than a soccer stadium/team.

Vital Considerations of Intercollegiate Student-Athlete Wellbeing: Implementing an Innovative Program Action Plan.
Tony Franklin, PhD
Associate Professor
University of Mount Olive
AFranklin@umo.edu
The perception of how intercollegiate student-athletes are treated has been at the forefront of intercollegiate athletic staff and university administrators. High school administrators also have a vested interest in this dynamic conversation. This presentation is designed to inform stakeholders by creating and enhancing a student-athlete learner centered culture in an intercollegiate athletic program. Furthermore, multidimensional problems exist which surround the holistic process of providing student-athletes with worthwhile wellness programs outside of athletic competition.

This presentation will introduce the Appalachian Trail, the world’s most popular long distance hiking trail, as a medium for teaching liberal arts principles in the sports management and honors classrooms. In the spring of 2019 the Catawba College Honors Program introduced a new honors seminar course entitled, “Finding Yourself on the Appalachian Trail,” the course adopted historical, sociological, environmental, spiritual, economic, and political perspectives in investigating the iconic trail that ventures over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. During the course of the semester, students and faculty encountered the trail via readings, discussions, and venturing out on a number of multi-day hikes over weekends and breaks. In doing so, conversations took the course’s content outside the classroom as students were able to apply a number of lenses to the larger implications of the liberal arts to the opportunities that sport management and honors provides, but also to think and interact responsibly with the world outside their front door. This presentation will provide an outline of the course layout, designed assignments, and hiking trips which were planned that invited students the opportunity to experience their education both inside, and outside, the four walls of the classroom. The hope of this presentation is to provide faculty members with transferrable approaches in developing seminar style courses that incorporate the aims of the liberal arts with the learning outcomes of sport management

Wesley Strayer and Brad Van Horn's "Victory Day: A Life Changing Celebration!" in Piedmont 1
Decription: Victory Day (live link) was founded in 2010 by three-time cancer survivor Aaron Segedi, a teacher and Varsity Football Coach for Trenton High School in Michigan.  Coach Segedi started Victory Day at his school on the belief that building character holds equal importance to teaching students the game-winning plays and lessons they will need to embody and embrace both on and off the football field. Or as Coach Segedi states: "Victory Day is an event set up for cognitively and physically impaired children to have an opportunity to play football or cheer and have their moment in the sun. Each child will be partnered up with a Trenton football player or Trenton cheerleader who will serve as their mentor for the day.   They will wear a Victory Day jersey or hold cheer pom poms and line up on the 50 yard line with their mentor.  The national anthem will then be played by the Trenton High School Marching Band.  After, our PA announcer will introduce each child as they run through a tunnel formed by the band into the end zone.  Parents will be seated in the end zone to take pictures as they run through the tunnel.  There will be a mock coin toss before the game."

The Independence HS staff and student body hold these same principals dear and find it important to put these ideals to work for their community. On behalf of Mr. Segedi and the Independence Community that has embraced such a wonderful event, we'd love the opportunity to share how much of an positive impact such an event can have on an individual's character, a school's environment, and a special child's ability to connect with peers outside of their normal routine.

Here in Mint Hill, NC,   the event is hosted by the Independence High School (IHS) Varsity Football Team, the IHS Cheer Team, and the IHS Marching Band. Victory Day’s core principles, past participation and positive community feedback has garnered local and national media attention, including interest from top high school & collegiate athletic programs from across the United States that want to replicate its success.

Description: Experience a hybrid approach to promoting physical literacy!  This approach combines three instructional models: Sport Education, Tactical Games & Teaching Personal-Social Responsibility into one “tribrid” model.

Background: Hybridization, combining complementary aspects of models, represents a practical way to translate theory into real world application, allowing teachers to the reap benefits of individual models while taking a more integrated, holistic path to physical literacy for all. To that end, we intend to:
  • Objective 1: After attending this , the attendees will be able to describe and value the fundamental features of the three research-verified foundational models (SE, TGfU, and TPSR) that comprise the hybrid model. Presenters will interactively highlight features of each model by engaging participants in a brief discussion to activate prior knowledge, draw on participants’ perspectives and experiences, as well as to reveal a need and cast a vision for the hybrid model, which is designed to promote physical literacy.
  • Objective 2: Explain how the hybrid model combines and applies the complementary features of each fundamental model to promote physical literacy. Presenters will systematically illustrate this hybrid model, while highlighting aspects of the fundamental models, via participant engagement using multimedia presentation and interactive discussion.   Teaching strategies, instructional materials and assessments will be utilized throughout to exhibit how the hybrid model can be implemented and evaluated.
  • Objective 3: Apply the hybrid model in their own PE programs to enhance the physical literacy of their students. In conclusion, participants will interact with the presenters and one another to discuss potential modifications to and implementation strategies for the hybrid model. This process will culminate in the development of an action plan, whereby participants will create a series of steps to implement the hybrid model in their own PE programs.

Sandra Nelson & Coastal Carolina University Students' "Student Majors who Walk the talk!" in Piedmont 2 (Handout)
Description: This innovative service-learning initiative combines meaningful community service experiences with academic learning.  In the fall semester of 2005, professors in physical education, history, Spanish, health, theatre, business, and elementary education embarked on the exciting challenge of incorporating service-learning within their coursework. This presentation will provide insight into the implementation of service-learning within the physical education teacher education (PETE) program.  Coastal Carolina University candidates will share their experiences of working with students in a variety of schools within a local school district. The uniqueness of the Wellness Activities & Lifestyle Knowledge (WALK) mentoring component incorporated within the Elementary physical education methods course will be highlighted By Dr. Nelson.  Alignment of the WALK program with candidate preparation according to the guidelines set forth by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) will be discussed.
