This year's posters include:
  • Amy Stringer's "Physical Education in the News: Themes and trends Over 12 years," This research project is the result of a review of US newspaper articles with the phrase "physical education" in the title. Themes and trends are determined.  Results from 2018-19 were compared to previous studies.
  • Jordan Weber's " Adapted Fitness for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Qualitative Collective-Case Study Approach," Three individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities taught dance, fitness and yoga in their communities.  This poster explores the results of that program.
  • Dan Grube, Justin Menickelli and AJ Grube's "Global Experiential Learning & Study Abroad: Exploring Culture, Education and Movement," Study abroad programs in kinesiology programs in higher education can allow more students to have authentic, experiential global teaching and learning opportunities, practical pre-professional organizational experiences, and an opportunity to gain cross-cultural collaborative and leadership skills. Development of short-term programs in the educator preparation program at WCU has allowed more teacher candidates to have authentic, experiential global teaching and learning opportunities. Faculty-led study abroad and internships abroad are outcome driven, and linked to strategic directions. Data points include quantitative and qualitative methods. Results indicate new learning by teacher candidates about cultural and social norms, educational policy and schooling, and activity.
  • Relationship between estimated VO2max and stage completion of the ManU Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test
Miracle L. Etim-Andy, Jennifer Chambers, Victor Romano, Kimberly A. Smith
The Manchester United (ManU) Fitness Test is a type of Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test that is often used to assess the cardiovascular fitness of soccer athletes. This fitness test is a series of one-minute stages that include intensive 100-yard sprints followed by 100-yard recovery runs. At the conclusion of this test, athletes were scored based upon the last stage that they successfully completed. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify estimated VO2max scores associated with completing various stages of the ManU fitness test.  M
ETHODS: Twenty-one female soccer athletes from a Division II college participated in this study.  The average number of stages completed for the ManU fitness test was 16.9 + 3.2, with the lowest stage completion at 11 and the highest at 23.  Two different methods of estimating VO2max were used in this study.  One estimation was collected from the First Player Status Analysis software which uses a proprietary algorithm.  The second estimation was calculated using the Uth et al. equation.  RESULTS: A dependent t-test revealed that there was no significant difference in estimated VO2max scores between the two estimation methods (p = 0.284). As such, an average of the two estimated values was used to determine the relationship between estimated VO2max scores and stages completed during the ManU fitness test.  A weak, non-significant correlation was found between estimated VO2max scores and stage completion (r = 0.29; p = 0.24).  Furthermore, an independent t-test revealed no significant difference in estimated VO2max scores of those who scored above the mean (>16.9 stages) versus those who scored below the mean (<16.9 stages) (48.6 ± 3.4 ml/kg/min versus 45.2 ± 3.5 ml/kg/min, respectively). CONCLUSION: Estimated VO2max scores were not related to the number of stages a soccer athlete could complete during the ManU fitness test. Future studies will identify the potential relationship between measured, rather than estimated, VO2max scores and stage completion of the ManU fitness test.

Abstract:  This research looks at data of body fat percentage for seven division II collegiate athlete sports teams, including male and female. We gathered data with a BodPod™ to gather and determine body fat percentage and they were analyzed using descriptive data.
  • Carol A Smith's "Examining Grit in First Year Adventure Students"
This study examines the pre/post test scores on grit in first year students before/after a week-long backpacking experience.
