Description:Paideia Seminars challenge students to look beyond the texts, engage in critical thinking, and improve literacy skills to be active members in the 21st century. In this lesson:
- Students begin by reflecting on their own nutritional eating habits.
- They are then challenged to compare and contrast the two graphics: the food guide pyramid and my plate.
- Students will share their observations and ideas through collaborative, intellectual dialogue (Socratic Seminar fashion).
- As the facilitator, tecahers will ask open-ended questions to challenge students to think, listen, and speak candidly about their thoughts, reactions and ideas rooted in two texts (the graphics).
- The main purpose it arrive at a fuller understanding that the text conveys and the values it embodies to apply the information to their real life.
- After this lesson, there will be two follow-up activities for the students to complete that will build on the knowledge gained from the Paideia Seminar.
- This lesson can be adapted to any health topic.
- Teachers will leave with a Paideia Seminar template and other Seminar examples. We will need open area seating so we can sit in a circle.
