Description: For over 30 years, Wake County Public School high school students have had the opportunity to enroll in an elective class called PEPI (Physical Education Pupil Instructor Program). Through this unique program, high school students are trained to assist elementary classroom teachers in leading physical education activities. This program provides a cross-age educational experience beneficial for both high school and elementary school children. For example, high school students are provided the opportunity to build both individual self-esteem and leadership abilities. At the same time, elementary students and adapted program students are given the opportunity to interact socially with a “big brother” or “big sister.”

Instructional training will be given to each high school PEPI student prior to working with elementary students. Classroom instruction will contain training in communication skills, elementary physical education and interpersonal skills in working with students in all grade levels. The content and experiences provided through this course can assist in becoming a building block for a student who has interest in working with young people. Objectives include enhancing students’ self-esteem, self-awareness, communication and social interaction skills, including leadership qualities.
